Overview
From July 6–9, 2026, SUS President Tanvir Hundal, SUS Vice President Internal Prabujot Bagri, and Senior Digital Content Coordinator Arnold Okware travelled to Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, to attend the inaugural Alumo Summit, hosted by Alumo. The summit brought together student leaders from post-secondary institutions across Canada to discuss the future of student health benefits, leadership, advocacy, and emerging issues affecting students.
What is Alumo?
Alumo is the University of the Fraser Valley Student Union Society's student health and dental insurance partner.
Working with student associations across Canada, Alumo administers student health and dental plans and provides expertise in student wellness, legal services, and benefits administration.
The Alumo Summit serves as an annual leadership conference where student association executives, staff, and the Alumo team come together to share knowledge, discuss emerging trends affecting student health plans, and explore ways to strengthen the services and supports available to students.
Key Sessions
Throughout the summit, delegates participated in a series of educational sessions and discussions focused on student health plans, leadership development, governance, advocacy, and the changing landscape of post-secondary education.
Insurer Trends: Shaping Student Health Plans
Delegates examined current trends affecting student health plans, including evolving student needs, changes in benefit utilization, and considerations for maintaining comprehensive and sustainable health coverage for students across Canada. Discussions highlighted the importance of adapting student health plans to meet changing healthcare demands while maintaining affordability and accessibility.
Student Advocacy
Delegates participated in a discussion emphasizing that advocacy is not limited to presidents and those in vice president external roles. The session explored how all student leaders can contribute to representing student interests, building relationships, and advancing meaningful change within their institutions and communities.
International Education in Canada
The summit included a session examining the current context, policy environment, and future directions of international education in Canada. Discussions focused on recent changes affecting international students and the potential implications for student health and dental plans.
Other Highlights
Student & Staff Round Table
Student leaders and staff representatives participated in collaborative round-table discussions to share challenges, successful initiatives, and best practices from their respective institutions. The session provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on student engagement, organizational operations, and student support services.
Student Impact Fund
Delegates learned about the Student Impact Fund, an initiative that provides Alumo funding for innovative student-led projects designed to improve campus communities and enhance the student experience. The session introduced the requirements to be eligible and selection process to receive funding.
Looking Ahead
The knowledge and connections gained at the Alumo Summit will help inform SUS's ongoing work to strengthen student services and the student health and dental plan offered to UFV students.
As SUS continues working with Alumo throughout the year, the organization will explore opportunities to keep health and dental services both affordable and accessible, and apply best practices shared by student associations across Canada to better support UFV students.
