SUS Campus Connector Services

May 31st, 2018

Dear UFV Students,

SUS has been monitoring difficulties encountered by students who take the Campus Connector shuttle from Langley (Carvolth) to Abbotsford each morning.  Students have reported to SUS that the early morning buses are often full and that several students are being left behind.

SUS has decided to add several additional shuttle "runs" each morning on the  Langley - Abbotsford (UFV campus) route.  However, implementation of these runs cannot begin until the contracted shuttle provider, Impark, is able to hire another driver, a process that could take two or three weeks.  SUS will email all UFV students to inform them of the start of the shuttle service and as to the schedule for these shuttles once a driver has been hired.

It is important to note that currently, the shuttle funds collected from UFV students have not increased in three years and hence cannot cover the costs of the new summer routes or the costs of the nine new shuttle routes added last October (2017) to the fall and winter semesters.  The nine extra routes added last year added an estimated $80,000 to the annual costs paid by SUS to operate the shuttle service.

The new summer routes will add between $13,000 to $16,000 to summer shuttle operating costs.

To summarize, the shuttle fees paid by UFV students will not cover an estimated $160,000 - $180,000 in additional shuttle costs aggregated from the 2017-18 and 2018-19 operating years.  SUS will cover these costs by using reserve funds but this approach is not sustainable in the long term.  As a result, students should be aware that to maintain or increase shuttle services beyond March 2018, it may be necessary in the coming year for SUS to hold a referendum to increase the shuttle fees paid by students.
