EMPOWER ME

Student 24/7 Mental Health and Wellness Support.

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED

To help UFV students pay for the health services they need, SUS has partnered with Studentcare to provide students with excellent extended health and dental coverage at a great price. The Plan is designed specifically for students to cover the many services that are not covered by the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (BC MSP).

WHO’S COVERED?

+ Full-Time Students

Most full-time students who are members of the Student Union Society (SUS) who begin their studies in the Fall or Winter semester are automatically covered by the SUS Health & Dental Plan. If you are covered, the cost of the Plan will be assessed upon registration for the Fall or Winter semester and will renew at the beginning of the Fall semester.

+ Spouse & Dependant Children

You can extend your coverage to your family (spouse and/or dependent children) by enrolling them in the Plan and paying an additional fee, over and above your individual fee as a Plan member. Common law couples are eligible. See the Couple & Family Enrolments section for details.

+ Indigenous Students

If you are already covered by an equivalent health and dental plan (such as a parent's or spouse’s employee benefit plan, or a plan provided by your band council or through Health Canada), you can combine both plans to maximize your overall coverage and reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. See the Indigenous Student section for more information.

+ Part-Time Students

Part-time students and Full-time students enrolled in the Bachelor of General Studies (Police Option) Degree aren't automatically covered by the SUS Health & Dental Plan. They can enrol themselves in the Plan by completing an enrolment process during the Change-of-Coverage Period and paying the fee. See the Self-Enrolment section for more information.

+ International Students

Eligible international students are automatically covered by and billed for applicable portions of the student Plan. See the International Students section for more information.

+ Sponsored Students

Most sponsored students who are registered full-time are automatically enrolled in the SUS Health & Dental Plan. Please note that sponsorship agencies may choose not to cover the cost of the Plan when paying for your tuition and other student fees.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions from students on Health & Dental Plan.

OPT-OUTS

+ How do I know if my opt-out is complete?

Once, the proof of alternate coverage has been reviewed and approved, you will receive an opt-out confirmation email which will also indicate the amount to be refunded as opt-out credit.

+ When do I get my refund?

Opt-out refunds are processed shortly after the Change-of-Coverage period (2 – 4 weeks). As this may occur after the payment deadline set by the University, we advise that students pay the full amount of their tuition fee statement (including the plan fees) while awaiting their opt-out credit, in order to incur late charges.

+ I have done a permanent opt-out, why am I charged the fees to my tuition?

Please be advised that if you have successfully completed a permanent opt-out on file, the plan fee billing on your tuition fee statement is only temporary and will be removed after the next scheduled file exchange with the University.

+ What proof of eligibility is required?

Proof of Eligibility is required for students completing a self-enrolment under the plan. The acceptable proof of eligibility document is a copy of the student’s tuition fee statement showing that they are being billed SUS membership fees for the coverage period in which they would like to enrol.

+ How do I submit Proof of Eligibility?

Proof of Eligibility is submitted via the coverage manager during the self-enrollment process. A window will pop up and the student will be asked to upload the document. Once the document has been uploaded, the student will receive an email informing them that the document is pending review and another email when the document has been approved or rejected.

+ When is the opt-out period??

The opt-out period is the Change-of-Coverage Period where students can opt-out, complete a self-enrollment and/or enrol their spouses and dependents. The Fall Semester Change-of-Coverage Period is from August 31 to September 21 and for new students starting in Winter Semester, the Change-of-Coverage Period will be August 23rd - September 20th, 2023.

CLAIMING

+ What are the different ways I can claim?

Once you’ve registered and logged in to the secure site, you can view your claim’s status by selecting “Processed claims” under the “Claims history” section in the menu at the top.

+ Is there a claiming deadline?

NEW - l claims must be received by Desjardins Insurance within 12 months of the date the service was incurred. E.g. If you visit a health practitioner on Sept. 30, 2021, you have until Sept. 30, 2022 to submit the claim for that visit.

International Students

+ When can I start using my plan benefits after I arrive in Canada?

If you’re an international student, you must be covered by the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP) or have equivalent coverage. Without BC MSP or equivalent coverage, you cannot make claims for SUS Health Plan benefits.

There is a 3-month waiting period before BC MSP coverage begins for new international students when you first arrive in Canada. During this time, a private basic health insurance plan that is comparable to BC MSP is provided through UFV.

+ Are International students automatically covered?

International students are automatically covered provided they are full time students who are members of the Student Union Society (SUS) and who begin their studies in the Fall or Winter semester.

+ What are the steps to accessing my extended coverage?

The first step is to verify that you’re being billed the SUS Health and Dental Plan fees. Then you need to verify that you are enrolled under provincial coverage (BC MSP or equivalent coverage). You may then visit our website studentcare.ca to obtain more information on your plan, the benefits accessible to you and how to claim for eligible expenses.

OTHER INFO

+ Do recent graduates still have access to their plan until the end of policy year?

All students who are billed the plan fees will have access to the plan benefits until the end of the policy year (August 31st) even if they graduate during the year.

+ Are Co-op Students covered under the H&D plan?

Co-operative Education students on a work term hold full-time student status and are automatically billed the plan fees in their tuition fee statement. Please verify the plan fee billing on your tuition fee statement at the beginning of the academic year.

+ I am registered for Full-time courses, however if I drop-out and go Part-time will I loose the automatic coverage and need to self-enrol?

Students who become part-time students because of a drop in course load may lose their coverage.
